What Is Domain Authority?

Domain Authority is a predictive SEO score associated with a website’s ability to rank in search results, based mainly on the quality and strength of its backlink profile. Domain Authority is not a Google ranking factor, and the score does not guarantee rankings, traffic or visibility for any individual page or keyword.

Key Takeaways About Domain Authority

  • Domain Authority describes a whole website, not one page.
  • Strong, relevant backlinks influence the underlying assessment.
  • A higher score does not guarantee higher rankings.

How Domain Authority Works

Domain Authority is calculated by third-party SEO platforms from signals linked to a website’s backlink profile. These signals may include the number and quality of referring domains, the authority of those linking sites, and the relevance of their links. Each platform uses its own method, so scores should not be compared directly across different tools.

The metric applies to a domain or subdomain, while page-level tools may assess the strength of individual URLs. A useful interpretation focuses on relative comparison within the same tool and search market. For example, a website with links from respected local organisations may show stronger authority than a similar site with many unrelated links. Domain Authority supports link research, but search rankings also depend on content, technical access, search intent and competition.

Expert Note

When we plan Link Building work, we inspect the quality, relevance and editorial context of referring domains instead of chasing a score alone. We also compare suitable competitors within the same SEO platform and check whether proposed links support the customer’s subject, location and audience.

Domain Authority in Practice: A Real-World Example

A Geelong plumber may receive a relevant link from a local trade organisation’s website. That link can strengthen the site’s backlink profile, but Domain Authority alone cannot show whether the plumber will rank for every local search.
