What Is a Featured Snippet?

A Featured Snippet is a search result that displays a direct answer above many standard organic listings. Google selects content from an indexed webpage and presents it in a format such as a paragraph, list or table. The result aims to answer a searcher’s question without requiring an immediate visit to the source page.

  • Clear page structure helps search engines identify suitable answers.
  • A Featured Snippet is not the same as a paid advertisement.

How Featured Snippet Works

A paper page shows the highlighted heading “Featured Snippet” with a short definition below

A Featured Snippet is selected from content that Google can understand as a concise answer to a search query. The search system may show a paragraph, ordered list, unordered list or table, depending on the wording and information structure on the source page. The displayed extract can change as search systems reassess pages and query intent.

On-page SEO supports this process by matching useful headings with clear answers and logical page structure. A page about planning permission, for example, might place a direct answer beneath a question heading, followed by relevant detail. Structured data can help describe page content, but structured data does not guarantee a Featured Snippet. Search Console can show impressions and clicks for the page, while the visible result itself remains controlled by Google.

Expert Note

When we work on-Page SEO, we review question-based queries and the wording of competing answer extracts. We then assess headings, paragraph structure and supporting context so each answer serves the reader before we consider its search presentation.

Featured Snippet in Practice: A Real-World Example

A Geelong plumber’s service page may answer “How do I find a water leak?” with a concise paragraph beneath a clear heading. Google could select that paragraph as a Featured Snippet when the page matches the query and provides useful supporting information.
