What Is Search Console?

Search Console is a free Google service that helps website owners monitor how pages appear in Google Search. The service reports search impressions, clicks, indexing status, crawl issues and search queries. Search Console also lets authorised users submit sitemaps, inspect URLs and review signals that may affect a website’s visibility.

  • Search Console is not the same as Google Analytics.

How Search Console Works

A laptop screen shows the Google Search Console logo and text on a desk

Search Console collects information about a website’s presence in Google Search. The Performance report shows queries, pages, countries and devices associated with search activity. These reports help you connect search demand with the pages that appear for it.

Related glossary terms: Impressions, Index Coverage, Sitemap.

Google also provides an indexing view and URL Inspection tool. The indexing view highlights pages that Google has discovered, indexed or excluded, while URL Inspection checks a specific address and shows available status details. A submitted sitemap can help Google discover important URLs, but submission does not guarantee indexing. Search Console data differs from Google Analytics because it describes activity in Google Search, while Analytics describes behaviour after people reach the website.

Expert Note

When we review Search Console, we compare query, page and indexing patterns with the website’s technical setup. Our team checks unusual changes against recent page updates, redirects and crawl findings before recommending a response. We use the data as evidence for investigation, not as a standalone ranking score.

Search Console in Practice: A Real-World Example

A Geelong trades business may use Search Console to see that a service page appears for local repair searches but receives few clicks. The SEO review can then examine the page title, search intent and competing results.
