What Are Impressions?

Impressions are the number of times a webpage, advertisement or listing is displayed to a person on a digital platform. The metric records visibility, not engagement. A search result can earn an impression even when the person does not click it, so impressions show how often content had an opportunity to be seen.

Key Takeaways About Impressions

  • An impression records display, not a visit.
  • Use impressions to assess visibility across a platform.
  • Impressions do not equal unique people.

How Impressions Works

Impressions are recorded when a platform displays content within a viewable area or search result. Search platforms may count an impression when a result appears on a results page. Advertising platforms apply their own rules for recording an advert display.

Related glossary terms: Click-Through Rate, Organic Traffic, Search Console.

The metric describes exposure, so it does not confirm that a person noticed, read or acted on the content. A page can receive impressions without receiving visits. Analysts compare impressions with Click-Through Rate to assess how often visibility leads to a click, while Organic Traffic shows visits that arrive through unpaid search results.

Expert Note

When we review impressions in Web Analytics work, we check the platform, search query or page context behind the total. We compare visibility with clicks and visits so reporting does not treat exposure as engagement. We also check whether a change reflects wider visibility or a change in tracking or platform reporting.

Impressions in Practice: A Real-World Example

A Geelong plumber’s service page may gain impressions for searches about blocked drains without receiving a visit from every searcher. We would review the related clicks and landing pages to see whether the visibility reaches relevant searches.
