What Is a Noindex Tag?

A Noindex Tag is an instruction that asks search engines not to include a webpage in their search results. The instruction usually appears in a page’s robots meta tag or HTTP header. Search engines may still crawl the page, so a noindex instruction differs from blocking access through robots.txt.

Key Takeaways About Noindex Tag

  • It controls search visibility, not whether a page can be crawled.
  • Apply it to pages that should remain accessible but absent from results.
  • A noindex tag is not the same as a robots.txt block.

How Noindex Tag Works

A noindex tag gives a search engine a page-level instruction about search result inclusion. The instruction can appear in HTML or in an HTTP response header, depending on how the website serves the page. Search engines must be able to access the page to read the instruction.

Search engines may crawl a noindexed page, but the page should not appear as a normal organic result. A robots.txt rule works differently because it controls crawler access before the page content can be read. Teams often use noindex for private utility pages, duplicate variations, staging content, or thin pages that visitors still need through direct navigation.

Expert Note

When we review a website, we check the noindex instruction in the page source and response headers. We compare that setting with the page’s purpose, internal links, and indexing reports. Our team also checks that important landing pages do not carry the directive by accident.

Noindex Tag in Practice: A Real-World Example

A Geelong service website may keep an internal search results page accessible to visitors while adding a noindex tag. The page remains usable through the site, but search engines should not list each generated search URL.
