What Is a Sitemap?

Sitemap is a file that lists important URLs on a website and provides information that helps search engines discover and understand those pages. An XML sitemap is designed for search engine crawlers, while an HTML sitemap helps people navigate a site. A sitemap does not guarantee crawling or indexing.

Key Takeaways About Sitemap

  • A sitemap guides crawlers but does not control indexing.
  • Only useful, accessible URLs should usually appear.
  • A sitemap is not the same as robots.txt.

Sitemap files present selected website URLs in a format that search engine crawlers can read. An XML sitemap may include details such as a page's last modification date, although search engines decide how to interpret those details. The file is commonly placed at a predictable website address and referenced in robots.txt.

Search engines can discover sitemap files through webmaster tools or through website signals. A crawler then assesses the listed URLs alongside internal links, page access and other technical signals. A well-maintained sitemap reflects the site's current indexable content, so removed pages and blocked URLs should not remain listed. An HTML sitemap serves human visitors and supports site navigation, but the two formats have different purposes.

Expert Note

When we work on Technical SEO, we check whether the sitemap lists useful, accessible URLs and whether its location is clear to search engines. We compare sitemap entries with the site's indexable pages, redirects and canonical signals. This helps us identify stale entries and gaps in crawl guidance.

Sitemap in Practice: A Real-World Example

A Geelong electrician's website may use an XML sitemap that lists service pages, location pages and useful articles. We would check that the listed URLs load correctly and represent the pages the business wants search engines to discover.
