What Is a Redirect Chain?

A Redirect Chain is a sequence of URL redirects where one redirect sends a visitor or search crawler to another redirect before reaching the final page. Each extra hop adds another request and can weaken crawling efficiency, slow access, or obscure the intended destination during a website migration, redesign, or URL change.

Key Takeaways About Redirect Chain

  • Several redirect hops connect the original URL with the destination.
  • Direct redirects give crawlers a clearer route to the final page.
  • A redirect chain is not the same as a redirect loop.

How Redirect Chain Works

Redirect Chain

A Redirect Chain begins when an old URL points to an intermediate URL that also redirects. The request continues through each response until the server returns the final page. Googlebot may follow the route, while browsers also process the redirects before showing content.

Chains often form after several site changes. For example, an old HTTP address may redirect to a www address, then to a newer path. A migration check traces each URL response and records the destination, status, and final page. The preferred arrangement sends the original URL directly to the relevant live page. This route reduces unnecessary requests and makes redirect mapping easier to maintain.

Expert Note

When we handle an SEO Migration, we trace old URLs through every server response and compare each route with the intended destination. We check for redirects created by earlier migrations, protocol changes, domain settings, or revised URL structures. We then record direct mappings so the migration reflects the site's final architecture.

Redirect Chain in Practice: A Real-World Example

During an SEO Migration, an old product URL may redirect to a former category URL before reaching the product's new address. The migration plan should map the old URL directly to the final product page.
